Since December, 28th, Iran is facing a wave of unprecedented protests since 2009 – the year Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was reelected.
All over the country, streets are invaded by crowds of demonstrators who protest against economic difficulties and the corruption of the regime, personified by both moderate President Hassan Rohani and ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran. Lead at first by ultraconservatives, the anger wins other layers of Iranian society, revealing a deep and general malaise.
In 5 days these violents confrontations resulted in the death of 21 persons, while the fear of repression keeps growing.
As a response, counterdemonstrations defending the regime took place and the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (Sepâh) declared on the 4th of January “the end of sedition”, denouncing the interference of the United States in the conduct of the protests.
Iran is at the heart of the complex issues taking place in the Middle-East, obviously under high tension.
